Relief for Jaquet

Cast your mind back to the European Championships in Karlskrona and immediately images of Hurskainen defeating Gade in the men’s singles quarter final and the Poles lifting the mixed title will spring to mind as some of the highlights and justifiably so.

But for Sabrina Jaquet, Wednesday 18 of April was a real red letter day for the Swiss number 2. Few who were present will forget the tears of joy shed by Jaquet after defeating Italy’s Agnese Allegrini in round three and equally remember querying the reason behind those tears.

The answer came pretty quickly from around the hall on that occasion as it was muted that Jaquet had just achieved here home Olympic Council’s qualification criteria for the Olympics by reaching the quarter finals of a major championship.

For every winner there is of course a loser and on this occasion the loser unfortunately was Swiss number one Jeanine Cicognini. Jaquet was ranked a full 28 places lower that Cicognini on the official list at the end of qualifying but her end of season form and her run to the quarter finals found her pipping  Cicognini at the post for the Olympic spot.  Jeanine was unable to fulfil the strict Swiss criteria of a quarter final in a major championship or a first round win in a super series tournament which resulted in the Swiss nominated Jaquet as their athlete for the games.
